The benefits of on-line and distant courses are that you can study at your own pace, in your own home and at times that fit in with your other commitments. This flexible way of learning is open to all city and rural students.

Understand the terms
When talking about older adults in need of care or assistance there are some words used that you will need to know.
The words nursing home and hostel for the aged are no longer used, but these places are now referred to as either ‘residential aged care facilities’ or just ‘residential facilities’.
People who live in residential aged care facilities are usually referred to as either ‘residents’ or ‘care recipients’. People who live in the community and receive assistance are usually referred to as either ‘clients’ or ‘care recipients’.
About Certificate III in Aged Care Work and Certificate III in Home and Community Care
Working with older adults is very rewarding and the successful completion of either of these courses allows you to be a personal care attendant in a residential aged care facility or a home care attendant in the community. If you are already employed in either of these areas the courses will assist you to have your knowledge assessed, enhanced, (as necessary) and recognised. These courses will provide you with a, nationally recognised qualification that formalises the skills and knowledge that you have already obtained.
Both courses will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure you are able to meet the varied needs of each resident or client at the appropriate level. In this area of work your duties may range from assisting residents or clients with washing, dressing and eating, to listening to the life stories of residents or clients. At all times you will provide assistance according to the wishes of each resident or client (individualised care) and treat each person with respect and dignity.
Course Content
The competencies covered in Certificate III in Aged Care Work include:
- Participate in the work environment
- Provide personal care
- Provide support to an older person
- Support the older person to meet their emotional and psychosocial needs
- Provide care support which is responsive to the specific nature of dementia
- Respond effectively to difficult or challenging behaviour
- Communicate appropriately with clients and colleagues
- Participate in safety procedures for direct care work
- Assist with self medication
- Provide physical assistance with medication
- Orientation to aged care work
- Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers
The competencies covered in Certificate III in Home Community Care include:
- Comply with information requirements of the aged care and community care sectors
- Work effectively in a home and community care environment
- Provide support to an older person
- Provide personal care in a home and community care environment
- Support the older person to meet their emotional and psychosocial needs
- Provide care support which is responsive to the specific nature of dementia
- Facilitate cooperative behaviour
- Communicate appropriately with clients and colleagues
- Participate in safety procedures for direct care work
- Assist with self medication
- Orientation to aged care work
- Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers
- Orientation to disability work
- Provide care and support Community
Entry Requirements
Students wishing to register for this course need to:
- be employed in an organisation which offers direct care to elderly people, or
- be willing to participate in workplace experience (un-paid) for a minimum of 120 hours
- have reading and writing skills to at least year 10 level
- be committed to learning
- have the maturity to ask for help when necessary
- have a genuine respect for all people, including yourself.
Students will need to:
- have a computer or access to a computer, (click link for the technical requirements of computer)
- have computer skills to a level that will allow you to access the information on-line or from the CD-ROM

Each application form must be completed in the applicant’s own handwriting and returned to Age Concern Pty Ltd by Australia Post
Course Commencement Dates
Just as soon as you return, by mail, the completed and signed registration form and paid your fees.
How long will the course take?
This will depend on the rate at which you complete the set work, but each student must have successfully completed all components of the course within 12 months of his or her commencement date to receive the designated award.

For a great bonus
Register for either course with five (5) or more friends and each person will a 5% discount off the Course fee. There must be a minimum number of six (6) registrations in the same envelope.
How does it work?
- On-line Students: When we have received your completed application form and payment, you will be emailed your student ID number and pin number and directions of how to commence.
- Distance Students: When we have received your completed application form and payment, you will be sent by express mail a copy of the course on CD-ROM or hard copy (paper) and directions of how to commence.
- All Students: Following your registration you will receive the contact details and photograph of your individual facilitator who will assist and support you throughout the course.
As you progress through the course it will be expected that you forward your work at the agreed times by email or the post. It is important that if you are having any difficulty you contact your facilitator immediately.
Other Occupational Names
After successfully completing the course you may apply for employment in the aged care sector or some hospitals. These positions are known by varying names depending on where you live. For example:
- Assistant in Nursing (AIN)
- Personal Care Assistant (PCA)
- Community Support Worker
- Personal Care Worker
- In-home Respite Worker
- Home Care Worker
- Community Care Worker
Employment Opportunities
Employment opportunities on the successful completion of this course include aged care facilities, group homes, private homes, Home and Community Care funded services, palliative care and even some acute care hospitals now employ workers with Certificate III Aged Care Work.
Career Pathway
A number of career pathways are available to you with further study, such as Enrolled Nursing, Leisure and Living, Health and Community Care etc

Skills Recognition
If you already have some training, work or life experience in the care of older adults,
you may be eligible to have your existing skills and knowledge recognised and get advanced standing for one or more subjects.
Processes for recognition include:

- Mutual recognition
- Recognition by assessment
